12-08-12 LONG BRANCH, NJ Man dies in boat collision off Long Branch app.com (12-08-12) A man died Sat. (12-08) following a boat collision off the coast of Long Branch. The man, whose identity was not available Sat. evening, was one of 2 people on an 18-ft. center-console boat that was anchored in the Atlantic Ocean about a mile offshore, when a 36-ft. center-console boat struck it, State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman said. None of the 4 people on the 36-ft. boat reported injuries, but both people on the 18-ft. boat were taken to Jersey Shore Univ. Med. Center in Neptune. The passenger later was pronounced dead at the hosp. The exact cause of death was not available. The 18-ft. boat’s pilot sustained non-life threatening injuries. State Police learned of the incident from the USCG. Petty Officer Brandyn Hill, a spokesman for the CG, said the passengers of the 36-ft. boat, named No Surrender, reported the incident to the CG by radio at 1:15 p.m. and took the injured passengers aboard. The man who later died was reported to have sustained a head injury at the time of the collision, and the other passenger of the 18-ft. boat was reportedly in shock. No Surrender headed to the Shark River, where it met with 2 Coast Guard boats that escorted them to the Shark River CG Station in Avon. 12-07-12 SHELTON, CT Man dies after rescue from Housatonic River ctpost.com (12-08-12) A 55-y/o man died Sat. (12-08) in Yale-New Haven Hosp., after he was pulled unconscious from the Housatonic River Fri. night (12-07) after a boat accident. Shelton police spokesman Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said Fri. a group of people were on a boat when it struck an object near the Sunnyside boat ramp. One of the men fell overboard, and those on the boat were unable to find him. Several emergency responders swarmed the scene and about 15 min. after the call came in, the man was found near South Bank Park by firefighters. Asst. Fire Chief Paul Wilson and Lt. David Catlin pulled the man out of the water and began CPR.
Police said the man was not breathing when he was found. He was taken by EMS to Griffin Hosp. and later transferred to Yale-New Haven. The man's name was not released by the state Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection, pending notification of family. The Shelton police, including its dive team, the Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. 1 and the Pine Rock Vol. Fire Co. 4 led the rescue. The Stratford and Sikorsky FDs also responded to the scene with boats. 12-06-12 ALBRIGHT, WV Firefighters Rescue Man Stranded In River firehouse.com (12-07-12) Two men were taken to Preston Mem. Hosp. late Thur. (12-06) after their boat overturned in the Cheat River canyon. Firefighters from Albright and Kingwood, and swift-water teams from Masontown and Triune-Halleck FDs were called to rescue 3 men from the river Thur. afternoon. The FDs were alerted at about 4:45 p.m. about the 3 men who went into the river after trying to cross it while tracking a bear. One man swam to shore and was taken by KAMP Ambulance to Preston Mem. Hosp. One man walked out on his own. The 3rd, who firefighters said was not a strong swimmer, was stranded on a rock in the middle of the river. He was rescued at about 8:15 p.m. by Trooper 5, a Maryland State Police helicopter that lowered a rescue basket to him. He was also taken to Preston Memorial. Firefighters were at the scene for more than 4 hrs. W.Virginia DNR is investigating the incident.  Read full story here.
 
12-09-12 MIAMI BEACH, FL Man Was Rescued From Waters Off Miami Beach After Boat Crash nbcmiami.com (12-10-12) A Florida FWC officer rescued a man from the waters off Miami Beach after a boat crash. After the boat crashed into a red channel marker Sun. evening (12-09), its passengers told Officer Nathanael Martir-Negron that their friend had been thrown overboard. Martir-Negron saw Christopher Alexander Afonso floating in the water and yelling for help, then threw the 20-y/o a flotation device and pulled him to safety. Afonso had an open wound on his head, was disoriented and did not know how he fell into the water or why he was bleeding. Martir-Negron took Afonso to a dock so he could be taken to a hosp. Martir-Negron cited the boat operator for being reckless and for not having a boater safety ID card. Read full story here.
 
12-08-12 CULLMAN COUNTY, AL Cullman man killed in Smith Lake boat crash cullmantimes.com (12-10-12) A Cullman man was killed Sat. (12-08) in a boating accident at Smith Lake in Cullman Co.
Joseph Brock, 63, of Cullman died of head trauma after the fishing boat he was piloting lost control and crashed into a boat dock walkway. The accident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. in an area of the lake near Co. Road 321. Brock’s sole passenger, Timothy Morrison, was not injured in the crash. Cullman Co. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, and the accident was worked by marine police. According to sheriff’s reports, Brock dropped his glasses while piloting the boat. When he and Morrison tried to grab them, Brock lost control. “They were riding along and when he dropped his glasses they tried to grab them,” Cullman Co. Sheriff’s deputy David Dover said. “At that point they veered off into a boat dock, hitting the walkway to the dock. From there they hit another walkway and went up on the bank.” Brock was transported from the scene to Huntsville Hosp., where he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

12-09-12 PITTSBORO, NC Man drowns in Jordan Lake accident newsobserver.com (12-10-12) Rescuers recovered the body of a man from Jordan Lake on Sun. (12-09) after he drowned near a boat ramp off W.H. Jones Road, officials said. Fire units and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. to the New Hope Overlook at the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Authorities in Chatham Co. say that the Fayetteville man was swimming out to get a boat that had drifted away from a dock. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that the water temperature of the lake Sun. was 56 degrees Fahrenheit.
The U.S. Search and Rescue Task Force says that water temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees can cause a person to lose consciousness in 1-2 hrs., and the body’s immediate survival reaction is to draw blood to the heart, lungs and brain and away from the arms and legs. Read full story here.
 
12-04-12 CHARLOTTE AMALIE, USVI 4 aboard sailboat stranded near USVI rescued washingtonexaminer.com (12-08-12) The USCG and the crew of a Chinese-flagged container ship have helped rescue 4 people aboard a sailboat that became disabled near the U.S. Virgin Islands. Spokesman Ricardo Castrodad says a U.S. citizen, 2 French citizens and a person with dual citizenship were aboard the boat. He says the boat had departed the U.S. state of Virginia and was headed to the Dutch Caribbean nation of St. Maarten. He said the boat became disabled Tue. (12-04) in 10-ft. seas more than 215 mi. N. of St. Thomas. Castrodad said the CG received help from a crew aboard the container ship called "Lingue" that diverted its course to help the disabled vessel.
