Newport Coast Maritime Academy’s ‘Basic & Inshore Powerboat Cruising’ course receives recognition for its Third-Party Verification

Newport Coast Maritime Academy is being recognized for meeting the American National Standard for Newport Coast Maritime Academy’s ‘Basic & Inshore Powerboat Cruising’On-Water Recreational Boating Skills Standard – POWER.  The organization's on-water powerboating course, “Basic & Inshore Powerboat Cruising,” has been verified to meet the American National Standard for on-water skills entitled EDU-1 On-Water Power Standards and has received the Verified Course Power Mark.

Under funding provided by a USCG grant, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators has implemented a process of voluntary third-party conformity assessment for on-water boating skill programs to verify a course meets American National Standards for Power, Sail, and Human-Propelled. Successful completion includes the award of a uniquely-numbered “Verified Course” mark indicating “The content of this course conforms to the American National Standard for on-water skills as verified through an independent third-party assessment process.”

Recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as American National Standards, the On-Water PowerOn-Water Sailing, and On-Water Human-Propelled standards identify fundamental skills that entry-level recreational boat operators should be able to demonstrate after receiving instruction.

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators is recognized by the United States Coast Newport Coast Maritime Academy logoGuard as an official national entity to serve as a third-party independent reviewer to verify power and motorized sail boating courses against the American National Standards for On-Water Recreational Boating Skills.  For more information about the process, please visit the Verified Course page on the NASBLA website or contact Deputy Education Director Mark Chanski (mark.chanski@nasbla.org) for details.
