NASBLA Executive Committee Delegation Meets with U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, D.C.

MOU was signed by Rear Admiral Todd Wiemers

On March 15, 2023, a small NASBLA Executive Committee delegation, led by NASBLA Chair Susan Stocker, had the opportunity to visit the United States Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The focus of this meeting was to re-commit to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the United States Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). This revised MOU is a transitional document from the original MOU which established NASBLA as the holder of the national training standards for state, county, local, and tribal maritime law enforcement, and emergency response personnel.

The revised MOU was signed by Rear Admiral Todd Wiemers, Assistant Commandant for Capability and John Johnson, NASBLA Chief Executive Officer.
Rear Admiral Todd Wiemers is responsible for identifying and providing capabilities, competencies, and capacity along with service-wide policy for the staffing, training, equipping, and employing Coast Guard forces to meet mission requirements. The meeting was facilitated by Jeffrey Wheeler, Deputy Chief of Boat Forces, and Verne Gifford, Chief of the Boating Safety Division.

Meeting with Captain Amy M. Beach

The NASBLA delegation also met with Captain Amy M. Beach, Director of Inspections and Compliance. Captain Beach develops and maintains policy, standards, and program alignment for all prevention activities associated with the safe operation of vessels and facilities. The delegation highlighted the exceptional and effective working relationship between NASBLA and the Office of Boating safety, led by Verne Gifford and Captain Troy Glendye, Chief, Coast Guard Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety. These relationships assist the states in ensuring the safety and security of our nation’s waterways by educating recreational boaters, as well as marine law enforcement and emergency responders, to a higher level of knowledge and competency
