    Would this electric prop, which takes the place of the removable fin on a paddle board, make the board a motorized vessel in your state?

    Yes, in MD any means of mechanical propulsion.

    In Illinois, the addition of the electric prop would make it a powered vessel under our definition in the law.

    Same for Florida:  "Motorboat" means a vessel equipped with machinery for propulsion, irrespective of whether the propulsion machinery is in actual operation.

    Yes. Anything powered by machinery or sail is considered a motorboat for registration purposes.

    This thread started because the company has been stating that registration isn't necessary. How do they know? They asked the California DMV!

     

    If memory serves me correctly I think there are/were a few states that don't require registration for boats with trolling motors under a certain size. But virtually every state would consider this to be motorized.

     

    I think it's a liability for the company to sell these without informing their customers of the legal requirements. I'm just trying to help them…But they are clearly more knowledgeable than I am.

    Well...just a question - is that a vessel?  It looks like a surf board and maybe even a paddleboard, but the USCG says a SUP is a vessel when operated outside the surf zone.

    No question that it has mechanical propulsion, but the question is would it be considered a vessel...then it also needs to meet carriage requirements.

    In Arizona, yes, it would be considered motorized and therefore require numbering and registration.

    ARS 5-301.7 "Motorized watercraft" means any watercraft that is propelled by machinery whether or not the machinery is the principal source of propulsion.

    That would definitely have to be registered in the State of Delaware.  We register all mechanically powered vessels.

    Texas law says this is a motorboat and therefore requires registration and all such applicable safety equipment.
