  • 1.  internal agency vessel safety training for employees

    Posted 04-06-2021 12:33 PM

The FWC is conducting an independent review of vessel safety practices within FWC (excluding sworn members) to identify potential recommendations for improvement.

As part of the review we want to contact out of state agency's that are similar to FWC in regards to vessel safety, training, acquisition, maintenance and disposal.

We would like to get out of state agency's current policies, procedures, and practices regarding vessels safety and training (ex. PowerPoint, manuals, checklists, etc.). Also, their current policies, procedures, and practices related to vessel acquisition, maintenance and disposal. If your agency or partner agency has any information that you can provide please contact Lt. Seth Wagner, thank you for your assistance.

    Seth,
ABYC publishes T-31, MARINE LAW ENFORCEMENT CRAFT ACQUISITION AND SAFETY.  This may be a useful resource on the acquisition and maintenance sides.
    Excerpt of the intent:
The purpose of this technical information report is to convey the essential safety requirements that are mission critical to marine law enforcement boats. The information contained herein can be used for the creation of requests for proposals (RFPs) for boat purchases as well as a basis for evaluating and modifying existing units. This document is intended for MLE boats and contains information that is not intended to apply to recreational boats and associated equipment. Not all ABYC Standards included in ABYC's Standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft are referenced here.
NOTE: The descriptions and applicability of the ABYC Standards discussed below do not serve as a replacement or requirement of the standard itself. Compliance must always be evaluated based on the referenced standard, NOT on the information contained in this report.

Also there is EDU-1, On-Water Recreational Boating Skills Standard - Power, if you are looking for establishing some basic skills an operator should have.

    Regards,

Your agency might be a good fit with the Scientific Boating Safety Association (SBSA). SBSA has boating program guidelines and a training course in line with the USDOI and NOAA motorboat operator standards. There are already a few Florida institutions who are SBSA members.
