As a former Marine Police Officer/ State Trooper in the NJ State Police Marine Bureau we would do investigations of areas to certify as to the need for Slow Speed Buoys and their placement. From that a standard was developed for the State of New Jersey.
Generally Slow Speed buoys are placed 200 ft. from the location that is being protected. This would apply to "all vessels".
The following is what is printed in our Boating Safety Certificate Training Manual:
*Operating any power vessel in a marked "slow speed/no wake" area greater that "no wake speed". Power vessels may not be on plane in such a marked area.
*Exceeding "slow speed/no wake" when passing:
Vessels not under command such as anchored vessels
Work Barges or floats that are engaged in construction
Emergency vessels ( displaying flashing lights)
Within 200 feet of a marina, pier, dock, or wharf
Through bridge openings of 400 feet or less in width
Through lagoons ,canals, or confine areas less that 200 feet in width
We also have a statute that states that PWCs must go at minimum speed in waters that are less than 30 inches deep.
this is an environmental regulation to protect shallow areas.
This just about covers every circumstance that we could think of at the time and it covers all vessel length!

Subject: No wake zones
Does anybody know of or dealt with no wake zones specific to a length of boat?
IE: no wake zone for boats 25' or longer.
