05-12-13 ATLANTIC OCEAN SE OF CAPE COD, MA Coast Guard assists in rescue of crew of dismasted boat 350 miles southeast of Cape Cod The USCG helped to rescue 4 Canadian sailors after their boat lost its mast 350 mi. SE of Cape Cod. The CG command center in Boston received a distress call around 5:30 p.m. Sun. (05-12) from Le Romarin II, a Canadian boat en route to Quebec from the Carribbean. It was not immediately clear what had caused the boat to lose its mast. After receiving the initial distress call from Le Romarin II, the CG scrambled a jet and located the crippled boat. An attempt to lower a radio to the crew and establish communication failed. The CG sent out a call for a nearby ship participating in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System to help. The MSC Chicago, a 1,040-foot private cargo ship, answered the call and rescued the sailors around 9:30 p.m. Sun. They are being transported to the MSC Chicago’s next port of call in Italy, where they will be able to catch a flight to Canadas Read full story here.

05-11-13 ROCKY BAYOU, FL Boat destroyed in fire in Rocky Bayou A 31-ft. boat was destroyed after it caught fire while en route in Rocky Bayou about 3 p.m. Sat. afternoon (05-11). A man and his wife and dog were on the boat when it caught fire, said USCG Petty Officer Jeff Mitchell. They were able to steer the boat to a pier near the Bluewater Bay Marina and get off the vessel safely. Another boat pulled the boat that was on fire out into the middle of the water so it would not burn down the pier. The Niceville FD sent a boat to the scene and found the vessel fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but the boat sank anyway and was a total loss. 05-13-13 JANESVILLE, WI Man pulled from Rock River after boat capsizes Rescue squads pulled a man from the Rock River on Mon. morning (05-13) after his boat capsized.
The boat tipped over N. of a bridge for the city bike path just before 11:30 a.m., according to the Rock County 911 center. The boat's lone occupant, Brian Spangler, held on to one of the bridge's supports as police and fire rescue crews arrived, Janesville FD Shift Commander Bill Ruchti said. They were able to get a lifejacket and rope to Spangler, then helped him get to shore, Ruchti said. Spangler was not injured or taken to a hosp. Spangler's boat was left floating down the river, Ruchti said, and has since gotten caught on a cable upstream from the Monterey Dam. With a strong current and high water to deal with, crews are still deciding what to do with the boat. "We’re taking our time to sort out what action, if any, is going to go on from here," Ruchti said. Read full story here.

05-10-13 SUNNY ISLES, FL Family Safely Escapes Boat Blaze A family’s plan of spending the night on their boat changed suddenly with the sound of a smoke alarm. Four adults, a 17-m/o and 2 dogs were on board the 33-ft. Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser in the waters off Bay Harbor Islands when the smoke alarm sounded. “The smoke alarm went off and when we went inside to check the smoke was coming out of the side of the boat. We went inside right away and we got the kid out and we jumped,” Raul Varela explained. All passengers aboard, dogs included, were able to escape the fiery boat without injuries by way of a dinghy. Varela heard explosions as the family escaped.
Captain Charles Hansen with a commercial towing co. responded to the call. “I tried to fight the fire with my pump but it was insufficient so I radioed the USCG. I told them to get the fire crew by the bridge,” said Hansen. Chief Gary Fregeolle from Miami Dade Fire Rescue had Hansen tow the boat toward a bridge so they could spray water. “It’s very difficult to maneuver. I was towing off the vessel’s anchor chain since I didn’t have time to pull up the anchor. At some point it got wrapped up in my propeller and I almost collided with it on fire so it was quite risky but all in all it turned out well,” said Hansen. There was not much left on the boat to salvage, but Varela and the rest of his family are thankful for their escape, and better yet their smoke detector. “That’s why you’ve got to keep the alarms on those things at all times,” said Varela. Read full story here.

05-12-13 LAKE ST. CLAIR, MI Couple in canoe rescued from Muscamoot Bay A man and woman paddling in a small canoe were rescued in Lake St. Clair on Sun. morning (05-12) when they ran into trouble due to strong winds in Big Muscamoot Bay. The couple, of Chinese descent who could barely speak English, was rushed to McLaren Macomb Hosp. in Mount Clemens where they were treated for hypothermia, said Petty Officer Zach Ogden of USCG Station St. Clair Shores. They were removed from the canoe by a CG rescue swimmer who was lowed from a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. The man and woman became lost while canoeing near New Baltimore. It was not immediately known why the couple was on a small boat during 48 degree temperature and stiff 7-9 kt. winds. CG St. Clair Shores was notified of the couple’s distress cellular telephone call by the Macomb Co. Sheriff’s Marine Patrol. They told authorities they could see land but could not reach it because of the stiff off-shore winds. “They spoke very little English so we couldn’t determine their exact position,” Ogden said. “We were able to use their cell phone signal to pinpoint their exact location.” Ogden said the CG launched their 25-ft. response boat but the water was too shallow in Muscamoot Bay for the boat to reach them. A helicopter was then launched from the Detroit station. A rescue swimmer was lowered and the couple was successfully removed from the canoe at 11 a.m. on Sun. Read full story here.
