National Boating Standards Panel to Develop Towed Water Sports Education Standard: Seeking Subject Matter Experts

The National Boating Standards Panel (BSP) announces the development of a comprehensive education standard for towed water sports, addressing a critical gap in recreational boating safety. This initiative aims to establish consistent educational guidelines covering safety protocols, hazard recognition, and conflict resolution for the growing towed water sports community.

As towed water sports activities rapidly expand, the lack of standardized education has created challenges for operators, participants, and waterway stakeholders. The new standard will provide a framework for consistent education on vessel operation, spotter responsibilities, and participant safety, while also promoting environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.

The Water Sports Industry Association (WSIA) has pledged its support for this initiative. This collaboration between industry stakeholders and regulatory authorities will ensure comprehensive coverage of key safety elements and help address user conflicts with shoreline residents, paddlers, anglers, and other waterway users.

The BSP is seeking subject matter experts to contribute to the development of this groundbreaking standard, which is scheduled to begin in late winter 2025. Professionals and stakeholders with experience in towed water sports, safety education, or related fields are encouraged to submit their contact information and a brief biography to standardspanel@nasbla.org for consideration. For any questions, please reach out to Mark Chanski.
