NASBLA’s BOAT Program Introduces National Readiness Database and Currency Reporting Portal
NASBLA’s
Boat Operations and Training (BOAT) Program has introduced the National Readiness Database (NRD), a new comprehensive operational readiness system designed to provide a clearer national picture of BOAT Program-trained maritime personnel and maintained capability.
Historically, course completion records have shown who received training, but they have not consistently shown whether those skills were maintained or where current capabilities were located. The NRD addresses that gap by connecting BOAT Program training aligned with the U.S. Coast Guard-recognized National Standard, annual operator currency, and geographic distribution within one system.
Authorized operational leaders can identify trained personnel and capabilities by agency, discipline, geographic area, U.S. Coast Guard Sector, and currency status. This visibility supports readiness planning, the identification of capability gaps, mutual-aid coordination, surge operations, search and rescue response, and tactical operations supporting high-value asset protection.
Annual operator currency applies to four BOAT Program disciplines:
- Boat Crew Member
- Boat Operator Search and Rescue
- Tactical Operator Course
- Pursuit and STOP
Successful course completion establishes that an individual met the National Standard at the time of training, while currency indicates that the associated operational skills have continued to be practiced and maintained.
The NRD identifies personnel as current, approaching expiration, or expired. Individuals are notified when their currency enters the 90-day expiration window. Once the required annual activity is completed and validated, an authorized agency Training Administrator can report the updated currency through the NRD.
Completing currency and reporting currency are separate parts of the process. If completed activity is not reported, an individual may continue to appear as expired, limiting the accuracy of the broader national readiness picture.

Because the comprehensive NRD contains national-level operational readiness information, access to its operational view is restricted.
The BOAT Program will continue developing instructional resources to help instructors, students, and agencies understand operator currency and the reporting process.
By connecting standardized training with maintained operational capability, the NRD allows maritime leaders to move beyond documenting who was trained and toward understanding where current readiness exists.
