This Minnesota Department of Natural Resources news release encourages recreational boaters to operate responsibly by understanding how vessel wakes affect other waterway users, shoreline property, and aquatic ecosystems. Issued before the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the release reminds boat operators to be courteous at public water access sites, maintain appropriate distances from shorelines and other watercraft, reduce speed in congested and shallow areas, minimize repetitive passes, and recognize the environmental impacts associated with excessive wakes.

The release reinforces the principles of the Minnesota DNR's Own Your Wake initiative by highlighting safe boating practices that help prevent shoreline erosion, protect water quality and wildlife habitat, and promote respectful sharing of lakes and rivers among boaters, anglers, paddlers, swimmers, and other recreationists. It also directs readers to additional resources on boating etiquette, boating safety, and wake awareness.
