NASBLA Annual Conference & Vessel Type Classification Guide
The Vessel Identification, Registration & Titling (VIRT) Committee presented their final video report during the 2022 NASBLA Conference in Manchester, New Hampshire the last week of September. The final video report has been posted to the VIRT Charges, Products & Reports page on the NASBLA website. During the conference, VIRT also had two breakout sessions. The first was presented by Vann Burgess, Senior RBS Specialist, USCG Boating Safety Division (CG-BSX-21), on Federal Regulations on the Uniform Certificate of Title Act for Vessels (UCOTA-V). The second session was presented by Kristin Williams, Recreational Boating Safety Specialist, USCG Boating Safety Division (CG-BSX-21), and April Hughes, Watercraft Administrator, Arizona Game & Fish Department, on Vessel Registration - Common RBS Compliance Issues and Questions. Recordings of both of these sessions have been posted to the NASBLA eLearning Center under the In-Person/Virtual Events. Please be sure to log in to see the recordings from this year's NASBLA Annual Conference.
During the NASBLA Business Meeting, the NASBLA membership voted to accept the revised NASBLA Model Act for Numbering & Titling of Non-Powered Vessels and it is now called the: NUMBERING AND TITLING OF NON-POWERED VESSELS USING THE USCG REGISTRATION SYSTEM. This Model Act will be posted to the VIRT Charges, Products & Reports page on the NASBLA website.
VIRT, with assistance from the Engineering, Reporting & Analysis (ERAC) Committee, developed a pictorial guide to provide more clarification about each vessel type as defined by the Standard Number System changes that went into effect January 1st, 2017. The Vessel Type Classification guide includes sample photos in addition to the definitions provided to the public in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The purpose of this guide is to help ensure vessel types are recorded in a consistent fashion on certificates, numbers and Manufacturer's Statements of Origin (MSO).
