Registration & Titling Spotlight
Priscilla Smith, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency

In each issue, the VIRT Committee will spotlight a Registration and Titling (R&T) Specialist that has had an impact on their division, state, or on a national level when it comes to influencing change and consistency within each state’s registration and titling departments. If you have someone you would like to nominate, please reach out to Rick Barrera.

Meet Priscilla Smith from Alabama! She joined the VIRT Committee in March 2023. She is a valuable member and the team enjoys working with her!

What is a fun fact about yourself that you'd like to share?
I have two boys and four grandchildren. My boys call me the “HGTV Queen” due to my love of doing remodel projects! I love being on the water, whether it be the lake or the beach! I enjoy cooking and hosting work luncheons and parties that bring everyone together so that we can grow stronger as a unit and division.

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?
I love spending time with my family. I also enjoy flower and vegetable gardening, DIY projects, college football (Roll Tide), and relaxing on the lake and beach.

What is the best restaurant near your office?
Derk’s Filet & Vine. This is the best restaurant for good ole country cooking.

How long have you worked for the state?
24 years

What is your position?
ALEA Driver License-Vessel Registration and Education Supervisor.

What is the best thing about your job?
The group of people I work with daily and the great leaders we have who make the job enjoyable. I like being able to assist people with registering their vessels and talking with them about boat safety so they can enjoy being on the water. I like meeting new people and learning about all the things our Marine Patrol does to keep Alabama waterways safe and the things that NASBLA does throughout all the states to make boating safe and fun.

How did you end up in the R&T office?
I worked for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Driver License Division from 2001-2019. I started out in the Driver License Reinstatement Unit as an Administrative Support Assistant, and was promoted to a Driver License Specialist where I worked in several different areas within Driver License. In 2019 I was promoted to Driver License Supervisor over the ALEA Marine Patrol’s Vessel Registration/Education Unit in 2019.

What area do you think you could help other state R&T divisions out with the most?
How to transition from a non-title state to a title state and how the registration of a vessel, along with how boater safety courses and boat license exams play a big role in the safety of everyone on the water regardless of whether you are new to boating or a long-time operator. Plus, I am always open to learning new things.

When did you join the VIRT committee?
March 2023 upon attending my first ever NASBLA RBS Workshop in Lexington, Kentucky.

What is your favorite VIRT resource?
I really do enjoy the VIRT Conference calls. Being a new member of VIRT it allows me to listen, learn and get a better understanding of all the things that the VIRT Committee does within NASBLA and with the United States Coast Guard. I also get to see how other states handle certain boating situations and things other states implement that could be helpful for the State of Alabama.
