Through trial-and-error WDFW has developed standardized design construction methods of boat launches and accessible loading platforms. The South Montesano boat launch on the Chehalis River includes a WDFW standard double lane launch and ADA loading platform. First, we’ll look at this facility and design and construction particulars. The site was designed with accessibility in mind to get all users onto the river.
After project completion, the Chehalis River re-routed itself during a 2021 flood and removed much of the parking area which has put the site at jeopardy. We’ll look at the causes of river changes, the modeling used to evaluate the flood and future flood damage, methods for protecting the site, and what it takes to permit and work with FEMA. We’ll touch on what this project tells us about the future with climate change.
