Wake Boat Hydrodynamics and Lake Sediment Dynamics

This technical report integrates four companion papers into a comprehensive review of the hydrodynamics, wave physics, sediment dynamics, and policy considerations associated with recreational wake boat operation on inland lakes. Drawing on published scientific literature, hydrodynamic theory, statistical analyses, and field studies, the report examines boat operating regimes, wave generation, ballast effects, wave stability, shoreline erosion, sediment resuspension, aquatic invasive species, boating safety, and the scientific basis for wake boat setback distances. It also compares wake boat performance with other recreational boating activities and reviews existing state regulatory approaches.

In addition to summarizing current research, the report evaluates the methodology and findings of several prominent wake boat studies, discusses the role of wind-generated waves relative to boat wakes, and presents a policy framework intended to support science-based waterway management decisions. The publication is designed as a technical reference for researchers, waterway managers, policymakers, and boating safety professionals seeking a comprehensive overview of the scientific and policy issues surrounding recreational wake boat operation.
