John M. Malatak served as Chief, Program Operations for the Department of Homeland Security/United States Coast Guard, Boating Safety Division, Washington, DC from 1992-2012.  Prior to his assignment with the U. S. Coast Guard he held various educational, technical and management positions within the American Red Cross from 1970-1992. During his Red Cross career he served in various capacity’s including safety representative for European Area Headquarters, Stuttgart, West Germany. He served as a Special Delegate to the International Red Cross Society, assuming special assignments to Africa, Greece, Crete, Turkey, France, Holland, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Portugal and the Azores. His last assignment with the Red Cross prior to assuming the role as Chief, Program Operations with the Coast Guard was as, Assistant National Director/Senior Manager, Health and Safety.
 
He holds under graduate and graduate degrees in Business Administration. A few of his accomplishments are: recipient of the 1991 National Honor Award presented by the Council for National Cooperation in Aquatics (CNCA); recipient of the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award of Merit, signed by President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, awarded for saving the life of another individual; 1991 inductee in to the State of Florida Sports Hall of Fame; a 1992 Inductee into the Lifesaving and Water Safety Hall of Fame, 2005  recipient of “Who’s Who In Aquatics”; a 1998 inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame,“Paragon Award”; 2000 recipient of the “Silver Schooner” Award; 2001 national recipient of the “Chapman Safety Award”, presented by Motor Boating Magazine and the United States Power Squadrons; 2002 recipient of the National Award of Honor, presented by the National Water Safety Congress; a 2002 Inductee into the State of Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame, 2004 recipient of the U.S. Sailing Association’s Larr Award; 2005 Inductee into the National Boating Safety Hall of Fame; 2010 recipient of the National Association of Boating Law Administrator’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He is an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Power Squadrons (Past Rear Commander for Program Partner Relations), and Rock Harbor Yacht Club (Nashville,TN).  He is a Boating Safety Master Instructor; Vessel Examiner, Certified Boat Crew Member and Certified Coxswain and AUXOP, and is a Junior Naviagtor with Educational Proficiency for the United States Power Squadrons,
 
He has authored over 200 articles that have been placed in major national publications; served as contributing author to various American Red Cross publications such as CPR for Adults, Advanced First Aid and Emergency Care, Lifeguard Training, Start Sailing Right, Canoeing, Instructor Training, Instructor Trainer Development.
 
He is married to Jane Williams Malatak, a native of Nashville, TN; has one daughter, Julia. He and his wife, Jane, live in Franklin, TN where they enjoy boating on their 40 foot Silverton MY on the Cumberland River and surrounding lakes of Middle Tennessee.
