We will present and explain our model of how situational awareness of both static and dynamic risk factors in connection with the type of boat being used influences the perception of the likelihood of falling into the water or capsizing and the perceptions of the negative consequences of doing so. These perceptions, coupled with the boater's beliefs about the benefits and drawbacks of wearing a life jacket will influence the decision to wear it or not.
